The political situation in Sudan:

In less a month - January 9, 2011 - the people of Southern Sudan and Abyei will participate in referendum that will determine the fate of Sudan.  This historical event is dangerous given the North's reluctance to part with the vast resources of the South (80% of Sudan's oil fields are located in Southern Sudan) and its penchant for achieving its objectives through extreme violence. The last civil war between North and South Sudan (1983, lasting over 20 years) claimed more than 2 million lives.
